General questions

How old, how heavy and how big are rats? What to know about rats?

  • This article deals with the animal species rats

The rats (Rattus) are a rodent genus from the group of old world mice (Murinae). The genus includes around 65 species, most of which are common in Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia. In the wake of humans, the rat and the rat have become widespread worldwide. The domesticated color rat, which is kept as a pet, comes from the wild rat. In a broader sense, the term rats is also used unsystematically to many other representatives of old world mice and other rodents.

  • General physique

Rats are a diverse group, the individual species differ considerably. You reach a head trunk length of 8 to 30 centimeters, the tail length is variable, depending on the species, the tail can be significantly shorter to significantly longer than the trunk. The rat, one of the heaviest species, reaches 200 to 400 grams – individual animals can weigh up to 500 grams. Many species are significantly lighter, so Polynesian rats in Hawaii reach an average weight of 38 grams.

  • Distribution and habitat

Rats mostly live in forests. Their habitats can vary from low-lying rainforests to mountain forests, most species avoid human proximity. On the other hand, some species have adapted to the proximity of humans as cultural followers and can be found both in houses as well as in rice fields and other agricultural areas.

  • Household and hiking rats have different preferences?

Household and hiking rats are omnivores. However, the house rat prefers vegetable food, while hiking rats like to eat a bite of meat. Since hiking rats can swim and dive excellently, fresh fish also rounds off the menu from time to time.

With the preferred residential area, there are considerable differences in house and hiking rats. Warm and dry places on the upper floors are very to the taste of the house rats.

However, attics are often no longer used as storage or storage rooms, but are being expanded into living space. This is one of the reasons why the household rat in Central Europe is now threatened with extinction.

Hiking rats, on the other hand, are really good with us. They prefer to live underground and create widely ramified underground gait systems. Sewerage is of course more convenient: a real rat paradise!

  • When rats become a problem?

Rats are intelligent and fascinating animals. However, they can cause great damage: they nibble on grain stocks and cable insulation and, in the worst case, can cause fires or technical problems.

Other questions

A rat bite can have bad consequences for humans because the animals can transmit over 100 different diseases to humans. These include leptospyrosis, salmonella, and antibiotic-resistant germs, according to Erik Schmolz, the animals can spread.

  • It's close to people.

Wild rats spread dangerous diseases such as salmonella, trichinosis, dysentery, cholera or leptospirosis, which is even recognized as an occupational disease among canal workers. Rats are intelligent, social animals – and very clean! Rats that live in the sewage system also clean themselves regularly.

In fact, places like the sewage system or garbage dumps would be rather uninteresting for rats if it weren't for the food waste. They are a real land of milk and honey for rats, as the little rodents have an appetite for food that we humans also love. In this way, rats have become the cultural successor of humans and thus also a threat.

  • The rat from the toilet?

A visit to the rat from the toilet bowl is a horror vision for many people. This scenario appeals to the fears and occasionally appears as an eye-catcher of relevant publications. And in fact, something like that is also possible in reality.

Climbing toilet bowls is not one of the rodents' favorite activities, but the climbing skills of the rats should not be underestimated. When leftovers lure in the drain pipe, as a hungry rodent, you sometimes put up with several floors of Kraxelei and finally get into people's toilet bowls.

  • How to avoid rat infestation?

Simple precautions are often sufficient to significantly reduce the risk of rat infestation. Food residues, for example, should never be disposed of via the toilet and should not be placed on the open compost, but in the lockable biotonne.

In general, the following also applies: leave no food or leftovers of cat or dog food open, close slip-through options in doors and walls and dispose of rubble – This is where rats find excellent living conditions.

The right precautions make the environment unattractive for rats. They do not settle at all or easily become prey to their natural enemies, dogs or cats due to a lack of hiding places.

  • Rat control by professionals!

If rats appear despite all the precautionary measures, one should think about suitable antidotes. It should be noted that control measures are regulated by the Animal Welfare Act and, for example, glue traps are now prohibited. Poison bait should not be interpreted openly – it must be unreachable for children, pets and birds.

A mousetrap with cheese does not help against the rat plague. Because rats are waiting for a new food source to see whether the "pre-costs" – are usually the careless young animals – that also tolerate the new feed, the effect of common rat poisons is based on so-called anticoaglutants. They prevent blood clotting.

Rats that have absorbed the poison do not die from internal bleeding until a few days later. The death of the conspecific is then no longer associated with the bait and the members of the rest of the council clan lose their distrust.

You can buy such poison in the trade with the corresponding bait box – against some of the poisons, the rats have already developed resistance. If you have a rat problem in the house, it is definitely recommended to get advice from the expert.

Rat infestation must be reported to the responsible municipal and city administrations. Local police regulations form the basis for measures to combat rats. In any case, you should obtain information from the respective city administration or the health and regulatory offices before fighting rats.

  • How does bait box work for rats?

Open the bait box using the supplied key. Fix the rat bait on the metal rod. Close the box securely and place it where you suspect rat infestation. Remove alternative food sources. Keep the key safe. Check the bait assumption regularly.

The control consists of:

Hazard analysis. Detection and localization of any pests present. Proper control with the latest technologies in compliance with all legal standards. Pest prevention to avoid future infestation.

  • Pests such as mice and rats

Pests such as Mice and rats cause high economic damage and pose an increased health risk in the company. Companies that process, treat or manufacture food in particular are subject to the legal obligation for professional pest monitoring and for the complete documentation of these controls.

  • Professional pest monitoring

Any company that manufactures, processes / treats or places food or commodities on the market must ensure that the food or commodities are free from chemical, biological or physical impairments.

Health risks damage line If food or consumer goods are affected by pests in a company, this not only poses a health risk, but can also lead to the closure of the current company.

In this way, pest infestation causes great economic damage. Added to this is the simultaneous damage to the image of companies affected by pest infestation.

  • How often pest control?

There is a constant risk that „uninvited guests “ will be introduced via goods and material deliveries or that pests from the surrounding area will actively accumulate. How often pest monitoring should actually be carried out depends on the potential risk of the company and the requirements of the respective industry.

On the basis of an operational analysis, in which we get an idea of the premises, the possible dangers and the individual wishes of the company, our experts prepare a concrete risk assessment for the respective company. The risk assessment indicates the interval at which preventive control is advisable.

  • Automated documentation

In recent years, automated documentation in the pest control industry has become increasingly popular. There are several reasons for this trend. First, it is standardized and thus reduces personal mistakes. Second, it is collective and transparent. Different team members can access the system and the information is shared within the team. The system can also store a large amount of information. Historical data can be easily tracked and checked with just a few clicks. In addition, users can create instant reports. This gives them a better overview of their activities and can take appropriate measures in good time based on the reports. Last but not least, pest fighters can invite their customersmonitor the activities simultaneously via the system. It is also possible to simply download the documents and pass them on to the customers. This is not only a convenient and efficient, but also a professional way of working.
